Born in Istanbul in 1972, he graduated from Istanbul High School in 1990 and from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1997. Between 1998 and 2003, he completed his neurology residency training at the Department of Neurology, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul University. During his residency, he conducted a study titled “Genetic Analysis of Familial Multiple Sclerosis Cases” at the Neurogenetics Laboratory of the Department of Neurology, University of Cambridge, and wrote his residency thesis on the same subject.
Following his neurology residency, he worked as a research fellow in neuroscience at the Neuropsychiatric Institute of the University of Illinois in Chicago between 2003 and 2005. From 2005 to 2006, he worked as a resident in internal medicine and neurology at the Department of Neurology, Saint Louis University. After returning to Türkiye, he served as a clinical researcher in the Multiple Sclerosis and Demyelinating Diseases Unit of the Department of Neurology, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul University, until 2009.
Between 2009 and 2011, he worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Neurology at Acıbadem University. He received the title of associate professor in 2011 and professor in 2018. Since 2011, he has been a faculty member at the Department of Neurology, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul University. He currently serves as Vice Dean, Chair of the Department of Neurology, and President of the Board of the Neuroimmunology Association.
